Why are so many samples from
so many different breeds needed?

Every breed is a bit different when it comes to DNA. It is important to get a representative sample from each different breed so the protocols that are developed will work properly for parentage and other testing.
Currently, samples from most of the common breeds and also from
some of what would be considered rare breeds have been collected.

Brown Swiss (Nebraska)

Highland (Colorado)

DNA protocols are the basic instructions for how to use the samples that come from the cattle. If there are no instructions or roadmaps to find what the scientist are looking for they would be hopelessly lost in finding the information needed.

Corriente (Neveda)

Shorthorn (Wyoming)

Research scientists at the USDA, ARS, USMARC are developing freely available maps and protocols to be used by any genotyping outfit.  These outfits then make their own version of cattle DNA tests for their cattlemen customers.  If the USMARC scientists don't have samples from a specific breed, the genotyping companies just go with what's available.  Its not a perfect test but sometimes it works well enough to tell something about the animal being tested.

Tarentaise (Georgia)

To get the best result in DNA testing a new roadmap is needed for each individual breed. Since breeds are always changing it is important to sample all the different breeds on an ongoing basis.

Chi-Angus (Texas)

Animals other than cattle are very useful in research. Water Buffalo, Bison, and Yak have also been collected. Finding the differences in these animals as compared to cattle is important in research comparisons.
